Our role
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is a people-led business and the role of internal communications is vital in ensuring that we have an open and effective dialogue with colleagues across the organisation, helping to build an inclusive culture, share SSENs strategy and direction and support core business objectives.
As the Head of Internal Communications, Networks, you will be the key business partner to the leadership team across SSEN in setting the internal communications strategy, developing and enhancing core communication channels and creating effective materials to build and maintain employee engagement. You will manage and oversee the performance of the Networks Internal Communications team and work closely with colleagues in SSEN Transmission to support internal communications activity in that business unit.
Key responsibilities will include the creation and delivery of key engagement activities, such as the Annual Leadership Conference, Director Roadshows and quarterly Open Forums, providing guidance, and resource as required. You will work closely with business change and business improvement teams to provide communications support to key improvement and transformation projects including the development of a robust cascade programme for SSENs field-based operational teams.
Supported by your team, you will be responsible for the development of core internal communication channels such as the SSEN Intranet and the employee app and also oversee the creation and distribution of the quarterly Networks magazine, The Circuit including content, design and budget.
Working as part of the Corporate Affairs team in SSEN, you will also represent Networks at Group level, gathering internal and external IC best practice to drive IC improvement across the wider SSE Group.
Your skills and experience
Degree qualified in a Marketing/Business/English/Media or similarly transferable discipline, you will have a strong understanding of the energy or related sector and the contest in which it operates. Due to the nature of our business, experience of internal communications within a field-based operation/environment is not essential but would be advantageous.
As an experienced Communications leader, you will have a good understanding of a wide range of employee communication channels and will be able to coach/inspire others to develop confidence and capability. This will also involve governance, mentoring and support to ensure leadership of a high-performing team with a variety of skill sets.
With the ability to interpret and develop briefs quickly to demanding deadlines and business objectives; you will be confident in designing, developing and delivering communication strategies and plans in a large complex organisation, including for significant change and transformational programmes. Experience of sourcing and working with third party suppliers, including creative agencies is also crucial.
Exceptional writing capabilities combined with a creative approach and strong attention to detail will be crucial in enabling you to take complex, multiple message and build an accessible, informative narrative. You will therefore be a first-class communicator with exceptional interpersonal skills, will understand how to adapt your style for various types of audiences and will be able to work successfully with internal and external partners to manage production of significant/set piece pan-Networks internal communications content and events.
You will be able to demonstrate the ability to establish, lead, build, improve and maintain strong working relationships at all levels. This will enable you to shape and influence individuals across the board with through the provision of informed, advice, rigour and challenge as well as support.
